Haridwar City
The word “Haridwar” literally means “Gateway to God.” Haridwar is one the seven holiest places for Hindus and is located on the banks of River Ganges where the river enters the plains. Haridwar is also spelled as Hardwar sometimes. It is situated at an altitude of 314m above the sea level. Haridwar attracts many tourists due to its religious importance. It is mentioned in the ancient scriptures. Along with Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad, Haridwar makes the 4 important pilgrimage centers where Kumbh Mela is celebrated after every 12 years. Haridwar is also one of the four places where drops of Amrit or nectar fell from the pitcher, which was being carried by Garuda, the heavenly bird, and the spot is known as Brahma Kund or Har-ki-Pauri. Haridwar is also referred to as Mayapuri, Gangadwar and Mokshdwar in ancient writings.

Today Haridwar is also an important industrial town of the state of Uttarakhand. After the state government agency SIDCUL (State Infrastructure & Industrial Development Corporation of Uttaranchal Ltd.) set up the integrated Industrial estate here, Haridwar has grown as an attraction to many industrial houses and manufacturing units.

Haridwar has a pleasant climate for most of the year. Being situated close to Himalayas, Haridwar never experiences extreme climate. Frequent precipitation takes place here. Thus, Haridwar is a tourist place that can be visited all through the year.
